Animals in captivity are considered domesticated animals such as pets, livestock and animals in zoos, animals used in testing. The earliest record of animals in captivity goes far back as 2,009 B.C in countries such Macedonia, China, and Rome. Those countries rulers kept and collected wild animals. Humans later collected animals to gain educational value by studying these animals, the first people to do this were the Greeks. Romans rather used animals for their wild purposes, they used animals in Colosseum battles to entertain their people with wild animals and human gladiators they fought to the death. Furthermore animals used for violence purposes are included with dog fighting and cockfighting and bull- and bearing baiting.
This use of violence migrated over to Europe to the middle ages and was popular. King Henry the first of England (1608-1135) established a menagerie (ménagerie) means housing for domestic animals. These ménagrie were cages or pits to protect people from the animals. King established these ménagerie in the Woodstock England. This ménagrie was there for several hundred years. These ménagrie contained many exotic animals caught or gifted.Starting late in 1700's these menageri started on the road by medieval entrepreneurs as circuses. These circuses started zoo's in 1800's. Mexico was first noted to have zoo's by the Aztec civilization then followed France, Spain and lastly Austria.
Alongside these first zoo's in the 1500 centenary zoos expanded in the mid 1800's to America and Britain. The oldest zoo and still running is in Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna established in 1752.
